WORLD RALLY

CHAMPION

1995

“Colin’s ability to drive Flat Out when needed won him the championship, no more than after the puncture on the RAC. He had the ability to lift the pace when already on maximum.”

Final duel

A record still unbeaten. At 27 years and 109 days old, Colin McRae is the youngest driver to win the World Rally Championship. A long-chased dream, pursued several times in the following years without any similar result. It happened in 1995; a year to remember. A world title for the Scottish driver and his Subaru Impreza 555 Group A, it was a rally for the ages.

A triumph that, in mid-season, did not seem so likely. There were retirements for McRae in Monte Carlo and Sweden, disqualifications imposed on his opponents for irregularities in the cars and it all came right down to the wire. Colin McRae and teammate Carlo Sainz are on equal points at the start of the RAC Rally in Great Britain, the final event of the Championship. Only one chance, one shot, whoever comes out on top is the best in the world. But not even a puncture is able to stop the Scot and he takes the 20 points.

Two victories - New Zealand and RAC -, two second places - Australia and Spain -, a third in Portugal and fifth in Corsica gives Colin McRae the world title. At Chester racecourse, McRae and Ringer, the team surrounding them and their beloved Subaru make history.
