“I remember being at the finish and experiencing a whole load of emotions that I just couldn’t name. Looking back, I now know that it was sheer pride… I’ve never been prouder since.

Stuart McRae, Colin’s brother

“This was a massive event for the McRae family. Not only did Colin win the championship, Alister finished 4th behind 3 Subarus in an old Ford Escort which was hired from Malcolm Wilson. Rally GB was a special rally for all of us.

A memorable day

Ahead of the 1995 RAC Rally, Colin McRae and teammate Carlos Sainz came to Great Britain on equal points. It is a rally to decide who would win the 1995 world title. "This is the most exciting rally of my career, we’ll let the driving speak for itself.” Colin says before leaving. Colin is hungry for success. A puncture on the first day causes him to lose two minutes but quite simply nothing could have stopped him: "I knew I would win the race, I was sure of it even before starting" proclaimed the Scot on arrival.

In the last two stages McRae is truly unbeatable, the blue and yellow Impreza commandeers the Welsh forest. McRae arrives at the Chester racecourse ahead of Sainz, ready to be crowned World Champion in front of an ecstatic crowd… There’s splashes of champagne mix, cheers of joy from the spectators but the most beautiful prize of all is the words of Dad, Jimmy: "What you did out there was fantastic, you have achieved something that no Scotsman has done before”.
